Who we are

We are a collegial and collaborative group of scientists united by a shared goal of using evolutionary biology to understand the living world. We are also passionate about communicating our science to others and training the next generation of scientists.

What we look for

We recognize that good science requires diverse perspectives. We welcome individuals of all races, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, religions, ages, abilities, and socioeconomic backgrounds. We also recognize that everyone's path to becoming a scientist is different and therefore take a holistic approach to evaluating prospective lab members. The main characteristics we look for in prospective lab members are: a genuine curiosity about the world around us, an interest in the type of research that we do, and training goals that align with what we have to offer as a lab.

How to inquire about opportunities

Prospective Undergraduate Researchers

We offer undergraduate research opportunities through a mix of BIO 199/395 (research for course credit), federal work study, and paid hourly positions. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact me either via email (catherine.linnen@uky.edu) or via the form below. Please explain your motivations for pursuing undergraduate research, why our work is of interest to you, and your availability for research (which semester(s)? how many hours per week?).

Prospective Graduate Students

We accept MS and PhD students through the Department of Biology Graduate Program (see link for more details on our program and on the application process). If you are interested in joining the lab as a graduate student, please email me (catherine.linnen@uky.edu) or use the form below. Please explain your research interests (what types of questions or projects interest you), motivations for pursuing a graduate degree, and why you think this lab might be a good fit for your interests and goals. Note that it is completely fine if your interests are still broad and/or you are interested in multiple labs in the department.

Prospective Postdocs

If you are interested in postdoc opportunities in the lab, please email me (catherine.linnen@uky.edu) or use the form below. Please describe your research interests, experience, and postdoctoral training goals.

I am always open to helping postdocs develop independent projects for fellowship applications. Some possible funding mechanisms include:

University of Kentucky Postdoctoral Fellowships (deadline 1 Nov 2020, see here)

USDA-NIFA Postdoctoral Fellowships (deadline 13 Aug 2020, see here)

NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology (deadline 18 Nov 2020, see here)
